What is Internet Marketing?
Depending on whom you ask, the term Internet marketing can mean a variety of things. At one time, Internet marketing consisted mostly of having a website or placing banner ads on other websites. On the other end of the spectrum, there are loads of companies telling you that you can make a fortune overnight on the Internet and who try to sell you some form of "Internet marketing program".
Today, Internet marketing, or online marketing, is evolving into a broader mix of components a company can use as a means of increasing sales - even if your business is done completely online, partly online, or completely offline. The decision to use Internet marketing as part of a company's overall marketing strategy is strictly up to the company of course, but as a rule, Internet marketing is becoming an increasingly important part of nearly every company's marketing mix. For some online businesses, it is the only form of marketing being practiced. Internet Marketing Objectives

Essentially, Internet marketing is using the Internet to do one or more of the following:
  • Communicate a company's message about itself, its products, or its services online.
  • Conduct research as to the nature (demographics, preferences, and needs) of existing and potential customers.
  • Sell goods, services, or advertising space over the Internet.
Internet Marketing and Home Business
Of all of the components of Internet marketing, prospective customers and clients expect a business to have a website. In fact, not having one could raise a red flag to a prospect. Online usage has become so pervasive today, many prospects might easily choose to do business with a company that they can get up-to-date information on 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Even a business that only has very local customers, such as a single location restaurant or shoe store can benefit from having a website and engaging in online marketing. And, those businesses whose customers are not restricted to a geographical area might have a difficult time finding an alternate method of attracting customers that offers the reasonably low expense and worldwide reach of a Web presence.
Because of the "virtual" nature of most home businesses, websites, if not an absolute necessity, can certainly provide benefits to a home business operator. Since most home-based businesses don't have a physical location, a website provides an inexpensive means for prospects to get to know what you do or what you sell and can even be a "storefront" for selling goods and services directly.
The Internet has greatly enabled home businesses to prosper because of the reasonably low cost to start and maintain a web presence. Therefore, Internet marketing should be part of your business plan and your marketing strategy.

how to get a cheap yahoo domain name

have decided that you want to have your own website on the internet its important that you choose a yahoo domain name that accurately represents what you plan to use it for and what extra features you need to get the most out of it.

With over 80 million registered domains on the internet its becoming harder and harder to find relevant yahoo domain names that are available which are related to the topic you want to target, especially for .com domain names which are by far the most popular. For this reason there are now many other types of yahoo domain names which you can choose from such as .net and .info.

The first thing you will need to do is visit a website such as Yahoo and start searching for available .com domain names using the search feature. As most names are already taken you will probably need to use three or more words to find one that is available (you can also use hyphens between each word to find available names).

Because people are familiar with .com domains you should start searching for them first but its not absolutely necessary and you can find a much shorter name using a different extension such as .net or .info. The extension of your yahoo domain will not effect the performance of your website or how well it operates.

If you want to generate free traffic from the search engines and achieve top rankings you should try to use keywords that you want to target in your domain name. So if you want to start a website about losing weight you should try to use words like "weight loss" or "diet" in the domain name to help your rankings in the search engines for those keywords.

Just having a popular keyword in your yahoo domain name is not enough to achieve top rankings but it will help the search engines identify what your website is about so its important that you include at least one keyword that relates to the market you want to target if you want to generate free traffic in the future.

When you have found a yahoo domain name for your website you should seriously consider adding the private registration option to your order. This will protect your domain from unwanted attention by hiding your personal details such as your email address which could be collected by spammers.

After you have purchased a yahoo domain name you will need to find a website hosting plan that suits your needs and meets your requirements depending on how much disk space and data transfer you need. Once you have a hosting account you can set up your website and have it up and running within a matter of hours.

history of domain names

What is a domain name?[ MXKN45PEGRZF]A domain name is a unique name, kind of like an e-mail address is unique, which is registered in a database called WHOIS through an organization called Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI). The domain name corresponds to a unique set of numbers called an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The reason we use domain names instead of IP addresses is that they are closer to our language. It would be difficult to market a site like this: "Go to 64.233.167.99 or 216.109.112.135 to search the internet!" A much easier way to do this is to say "Go to www.Google.com or www.yahoo.com to search the internet!" (Both Google and Yahoo are trade marked by Google, Inc., and Yahoo, Inc., respectively).

A domain name points to a computer called a "name server". The name server knows that your domain name corresponds to your web hosting server's IP address and it routes the person who typed in your domain name to your web hosting server - to your web site. That is how people anywhere in the world can see your web site by typing your domain name.

In 1992, the National Science Foundation granted an exclusive contract to NSI to be the sole registrar of top level domain names. NSI also had a cooperative agreement with United States Department of Commerce ("DoC"). With no competition, consumers were at the mercy of NSI.

In 1998, NSI and the DoC amended their cooperative agreement to allow for competing registrars. NSI was forced to provide domain name registration to the competing registrars at wholesale prices, rather than the standard $34.99 annual fee. NSI still charges $34.99 per year.

In late 1998, the DoC assigned the responsibility of overseeing the transition to a competitive market for domain names and accreditation of new registrars to a new organization called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

In 1999, ICANN began taking applications from companies who wanted to become registrars - and then capitalism took over: companies had to compete for business. Prices came down and service improved, however some are better than others. For a more detailed history of this transition, visit www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation-history.htm.

Even with the positive effects of competition in the domain name marketplace, the process of internet domain name registration remains a mystery for many.

There are a lot of companies that want to charge you hundreds of dollars to do the simple task of domain name registration for you. There are some registration companies who will charge you $35 just to register a domain. And there are web site consultants who charge over $100 to do the work for you. But you can do it yourself in about 15 minutes and it can cost as little as $1.99 for a year. If you do some research, learn a little and work smart, you can save yourself some money - and some headaches.
